List of Miss World runners-up and finalists
Miss World is the oldest surviving international beauty contest and is one of the Big Four international beauty pageants. The contest was founded by Eric Morley in 1951 and is regarded as one of the two most prestigious beauty pageants along with Miss Universe, which was founded in 1952. After Morley's death in 2000, his wife Julia Morley took over the running of the pageant.
==History==
1951-1960: The number of finalists in the first 10 contests varied between five and seven. There were five finalists four times (1951-52 and 1959-60), six finalists four times (1953-56) and seven finalists in 1957 and 1958.
1961-1987: 25 out of the 27 contests during this period would have seven finalists, the exceptions being 1962 when there were eight, and 1987 when there were six. 1962 is the only year in the contests history when there has not been five to seven finalists. During this time, there was usually 15 semi-finalists, the exceptions being 1963 (14), 1964 and 1965 (16) and 1987 (12).
1988-2002: The 15 consecutive contests in this period would announce a Top 10, followed by five finalists. In 1998 and 2002, after the announcement of the Top 10 in the live final, there was no announcement of the five finalists, only the Top 3 were revealed. However, the official Miss World site lists the Top 5 finalists for both years. 2002 also saw the total number of placements reach 20 for the first time.
2003-present: Since 2003, with the total number of contestants reaching well over 100, the number of placements has varied between 15 and 30. The number of finalists in these 12 contests has once again varied between five and seven, with five finalists five times (2003-04, 2007-08 and 2014), six finalists three times (2005-06 and 2013), and seven four times (2009-2012).
In 1974 and 1980, the winner resigned and was replaced by the first runner-up. In 1981, the continental queens of beauty segment was added to the contest to honour the highest placed contestant from each continent. (for the complete list, see Miss World Continental Queens of Beauty).
Notes:
*The 1962 contest had eight finalists, however the placements from sixth to eighth are unknown.
*The 1965 contest had seven finalists, however only the Top 5 placements are known. Sixth and seventh are listed alphabetically by country.
*The 2005 and 2006 contests had six finalists, however the placements from fourth to sixth are unknown. The official Miss World site lists them as Top 6 finalists. In the above table they are listed alphabetically by country.
